You cannot sustain accountability with others if you don't practice it with yourself first, as a rhythm rather than a rescue. Real self-accountability is not a mood that strikes when you feel bad about something, and it is not the internal reckoning that happens at 2am after a hard day when your defenses are down. That version is reactive, it is guilt dressed up as growth, and it tends to pass by morning without changing much. Real self-accountability is a practice, scheduled and plain, that you do whether you feel like it or not on any given week. // Thirty minutes at the end of the week is enough to do the work honestly. You sit down and ask yourself four questions. What did I actually own this week that was mine to own? What did I dodge or blame on circumstances when I knew better? Whose feedback did I resist receiving? What one thing am I going to do differently next week because of what I just saw about myself? // Notice what your body wants to do when you imagine sitting down with those questions. There is often a resistance, a pulling away, a sense that the answers might be heavier than you want to look at on a Friday afternoon. That resistance is why the practice matters. The questions you most want to avoid are usually the ones carrying the most information about what needs to shift in how you're operating. // Think of it like tending to a room in your home. You can deep clean it once a year in a panic, or you can straighten it every Friday in fifteen minutes of ordinary attention. The weekly practice is lighter, it keeps things from accumulating into something overwhelming, and it means the hard truths never have time to become a crisis that blindsides you later. // The leaders I watch stay grounded in high-stakes roles are the ones who have some version of this in their week. It doesn't have to be elaborate. // What would change if you made self-accountability a weekly practice instead of an occasional reckoning?
